Freshwater
Fish Marketing Corporation is currently working on strategic initiatives
involving species of rough fish. The Corporation has recently secured
a market for processed carp roe that nearly doubles the returns
to a carp fisher. Lake St. Martin commercial fisher Derek Gould (below
right) and Curtis, his helper (below left) are shown harvesting roe from
carp. Carp roe is purchased during the winter and spring carp seasons.

Fisheries
Development Initiative: Rough Fish
MULLET
|

Another
rough fish strategic
initiative focuses on mullet (sucker). Pictured above
is a mechanical dressing line for mullet, set up
on an experimental testing basis in St. Martin, Manitoba.
Initial results from the tests are very favourable and
point to the potential benefits to fishers, having their
mullet dressed mechanically in the field. The throughput
of this mechanical line is 1400 kilograms of round fish
per hour. Expansion of this initiative will result in
increased returns to fishers.
